Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 5.5, a Faster and Cheaper AI Model

Anthropic Launches Claude Haiku 5.5, Targeting Faster and Lower-Cost AI
San Francisco: Artificial intelligence company Anthropic has launched Claude Haiku 5.5, a new AI model designed to deliver faster and more cost-efficient performance for businesses and developers handling large volumes of AI tasks.
The latest addition to Anthropic's Claude 5.5 family is aimed at applications including customer support, document summarisation, data extraction, classification, database queries, coding assistance and AI-powered agents.
A major focus of the new model is reducing the cost of running AI at scale. Anthropic says Claude Haiku 5.5 is significantly cheaper to operate than its predecessor, Haiku 4.5, while also offering improvements in several areas of performance.
The company has listed pricing of $0.10 per million input tokens and $0.50 per million output tokens for prompts up to 100,000 tokens. Anthropic estimates that the model can reduce average costs by around 75 per cent compared with Haiku 4.5, after accounting for differences in token usage.
Focus on speed and AI agents:
Anthropic is positioning Haiku 5.5 as its fastest model at standard speeds. The company says this makes it suitable for applications where rapid responses are important, including customer-service systems, voice assistants and browser-based AI tools.
The model also introduces an adjustable effort feature, allowing developers to control the amount of reasoning used for a task. This can help businesses balance response quality, processing time and computing costs depending on their requirements.
Another area of focus is AI agents. Haiku 5.5 can be used as a subagent alongside larger AI models, handling smaller tasks such as searching documents, extracting information or processing data while a more powerful model manages the overall workflow.
Growing competition in AI:
The launch comes as competition in the artificial intelligence industry continues to intensify. AI companies are increasingly focusing not only on model capabilities but also on reducing the cost and time required to deploy AI across large-scale applications.
For businesses processing millions of AI requests, lower inference costs could make it more practical to integrate AI into customer service, software development, data analysis and other everyday operations.
Claude Haiku 5.5 is available through Anthropic's platform and is also being offered through major cloud platforms, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud and Microsoft Azure.
While Haiku 5.5 is designed primarily for speed and cost efficiency, Anthropic continues to position its larger Claude models for more complex reasoning and advanced workloads.
The launch highlights a broader shift in the AI industry, where the next phase of competition is increasingly centred on making artificial intelligence not only more capable, but also faster, cheaper and easier to deploy at scale.
